Hopi kachina dolls are traditional wooden carvings made by the Hopi people of northeastern Arizona to represent Katsinam, immortal spirit beings.
Virgil Long is a contemporary Hopi Katsina carver known for his clean, precise sculptural style and careful attention to detail. He follows traditional methods, carving figures from cottonwood root (paako) and finishing them with hand-painted details. We purchase our Kachina dolls directly from Virgil, removing the need for a trading company and maximizing the artists’ compensation.
The Red Beard Long Hair Kachina (Hokyan Angak’china) is a deeply revered Hopi spirit who sings melodious songs to bring gentle, life-giving rain and flowers to high desert crops. Poetically, his long hair and flowing beard symbolize falling water, while the distinct red color of the beard specifically represents a visual promise of moisture—mimicking the dramatic crimson sky when rain falls through the rays of a setting sun.
This Kachina is 16 inches tall with the feather.
