Hopi kachina dolls are traditional wooden carvings made by the Hopi people of northeastern Arizona to represent Katsinam, immortal spirit beings.
Virgil Long is a contemporary Hopi Katsina carver known for his clean, precise sculptural style and careful attention to detail. He follows traditional methods, carving figures from cottonwood root (paako) and finishing them with hand-painted details. We purchase our Kachina dolls directly from Virgil, removing the need for a trading company and maximizing the artists’ compensation.
The Hopi Butterfly Kachina (Poli Katsina) represents springtime, renewal, and the joyful transformation of the natural world. This spirit is deeply tied to the arrival of warm weather, summer rains, and the blooming of desert flowers, serving as a catalyst for agricultural growth. During traditional social dances, the Butterfly Kachina brings blessings for a bountiful harvest, a healthy community, and a long, prosperous life for the Hopi youth.
This Kachina is 6.5 inches tall.
